Waaaay back in 1989, my father took a few mates and I to the cinema to see a little film called "Batman". Impressionable young lad that I was, I became irrevocably and irreversibly hooked on all things Dark Knight.
I didn't just soak up the flashy Tim Burton version, I delved into the comics, the camp telly shows, the old black and white serials, the animated Bruce Timm version, all of it.
There was so much under the surface of this character and decades of brilliant stories, it blew my little mind! I still remember the initial impact of comics like Year One, Death In The Family, The Killing Joke, and Knightfall.
There's something about Batman's mix of tragedy, humanity, nobility, perserverance, downright lunacy and brilliant costume that all add up to making him (in this fan's opinion) the greatest comic book hero. It's not about powers for him, it's a cause. No others even come close. Then there's the additional benefit of the best supporting cast of heroes and villains to boot! Gold. Solid gold.

And if you're a young pup that has never seen reruns of the 60's Batman era series, behold:
